How the figures work
- Every price is copied from the venue's own wine list, on its own website (or its group's), and dated on its page. Lists older than six months, or dated more than a year before we read them, are left out.
- A glass is a 175ml glass of still red, white, rosé or orange wine, from £3 to £25; for sparkling wine it's the 125ml glass. A bottle is 75cl, from £10 to £500. "From" prices, offers and alcohol-free wines are listed on venue pages but not counted.
- A venue's cheapest glass stands in for its house wine: few lists say which one that is. The Plymouth figure is the middle of the venues' cheapest glasses, so each venue counts once.
- Grapes, styles and countries are ours, read from the list's own words ("El Mazo Tempranillo, Spain"). A region that means one grape counts for that grape too: Sancerre is Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis is Chardonnay.
- 251 venues' websites were read; 47 put a wine list online. Not every venue does: every venue's page says what we found.
